AS THE CROW FLIES

“The script, staging and performances were subtle, supple and revealing by coasting humour rather than pity. The production navigated so well between cultures.” (Paul Smith, Director British Council Germany).

“Superb writing, superb performances!” (Wilhelm Schmid, German philosopher)

AS THE CROW FLIES, Berlin – Todmorden is an autobiographical piece of theatre based on my experience of living in(between) two cultures, collectively devised at the Berlin Globe with local artists.

Do you know where you belong?
Wiebke is a Berliner. Wiebke lives in the hills of Yorkshire.
She swapped graffiti for sheep, techno clubs for country pubs.
Still, her roots are Berlin.
Interweaving personal diary entries with texts and songs by both German and English authors, Wiebke creates a turbulent night of theatre and cabaret, honest and provocative.  In an attempt to understand her identity, she speaks about the pull of two cultures, curious encounters with alien traditions, and the need to pass on that love for Berlin to her English daughter. A musical mosaic of intercultural experiences.

This performance is part of my practice-based PhD research at University of Leeds where I’m investigating the relationship between performance and transcultural identity. After its development and run at the Berlin Globe, I will translate the piece into English for performances at Waterside Arts Centre, Manchester and stage@leeds.
