RESEARCH SUMMARY

My doctoral practice research combines my performance and translation skills. This means I conduct research through devising, performing and translating theatre pieces in collaboration with professional theatre artists in Britain and Germany. I’m interested in what happens when theatre travels across national borders. What happens to the pieces when they are translated? In what way do they change? What can we learn from the experience of the performer who presents the same piece in two different languages for two different cultural settings?

My first practice research project involved the development of the theatre play As The Crow Flies. The piece was created in collaboration with German theatre artists and in partnership with Globe Berlin where it premiered in July 2022. Following a successful run at the Globe throughout the summer, I translated As The Crow Flies into English and performed it in Manchester and Leeds in November of the same year..

My second practice research project, Phobia, was developed with an interdisciplinary team of English artists and in partnership with Stage@Leeds and Waterside Arts Centre, Sale. Phobia premiered in June 2025 in Leeds and is currently being translated for performances in Germany. Phobia received funding from the Arts Council England. www.thisisphobia.com
